Explanation: The first filter allows light parallel or with a parallel
component to the filter's orientation (the orientation of the long polymer
molecules) to pass. The middle filter allows a component along its
orientation to pass through. Because of the middle filter, light that reaches
the third and top filter is no longer at right angles to the top filter,
as it was before, but is rather oriented at the angle of the middle filter.
As a result, a component of the middle filter's component is allowed to
pass through the top filter. Instead of a dark square, we see some light
passing through the polarization sandwich. |
