You can try a demo copy of Version 4.0 by following the steps below. This demo copy will only work with the files included in the AVI Movie Data Base on this web site. So, to try the software, you will need to download at least one of the avi files too. When running in the browser mode, you will get a file not found error if you try to open a document that you have not downloaded.
Below are avi video experiments that you may download. You are free to use or distribute them for non-profit use only. Included in each zip file is the avi file and its HTML lab document. This lab document is the same as the one you will see when clicking on the Experiment Lab Document links in the table below. You can download a demo copy of World-in-Motion Video Analysis Demo to analyze these files or use another video analysis package.

World-in-Motion physics video motion analysis software is a useful educational tool for lectures, lab experiments, and student assignments.
Start World-in-Motion from the autoplay screen that appears after you insert the CD. You can run the software directly from the CD or install it if necessary.

The video analysis software starts in the browser mode shown in Figure 2.

In this mode, you can easily select a major topic in the left frame, then select a video experiment for analysis in the right frame as shown in Figure 3.

Once you have selected a specific experiment, a document will appear. From the document you can enter the main video analysis mode shown in Figure 4. The video is marked in this screen.

The main video screen has many options, including:
At any time, you can use the Lab Document button to return to the browser document.
Once the video is marked, then the data can be plotted. Figure 5 shows a plot of momentum versus time. The magenta line in the graph corresponds to the magenta crosses in the smaller video. This allows students to correlate the graph with the video.

Once a graph is created, one possibility is to paste it into Lecture Notes for in-class discussion as shown in Figure 6.

With a VGA projector and a pen pad pointing device, Lecture Notes allows you to lecture on the computer screen. Files are saved as htm documents with links to jpg images of your notes. Copy the htm and jpg files to a web site for student access.
Another option is to copy the data onto the clipboard and analyze it using the data analysis software. This software is available from the Graph menu item in Editor, or the Analyze Your Own Data link in Graphics Tutor. Figure 7 shows the data analysis screen.

Data can be manipulated further using the Table Calculator, or plotted as is. The Table Calculator allows column calculations for many functions. Data can be easily plotted using the New Graph link. Up to three different plots can be shown on the same graph. Figure 8 shows a plot generated with data from the video analysis software. The graphs can be copied and pasted into Lecture Notes for in-class discussion or Editor for reports.

When used in the non-browser mode, the video analysis software can be used to facilitate capturing your own video experiments. Figure 9 shows the capture window as seen in the Windows 95 system environment. Capturing video is started from within video analysis. Once capturing is completed, video analysis is reinstated with the captured video ready for analysis. To capture video, you need a Video for Windows compatible capture board and a video camera. These items are not included with the World-in-Motion software.

Once you have captured a video, start a new lab document from within video analysis by pressing the Lab Document button. You can edit the new document with Editor. Figure 10 shows the Editor screen open with a document.

Editor includes a paint program where images can be created or edited. Figure 11 shows an image opened in paint. Paint is started using the Paint menu item in Editor. Editor also allows you to analyze data and insert graphs and tables with the Graph menu item.

The last feature of World-in-Motion ToolKit is the Graphics Tutor program. This software discusses various graphing techniques and then allows students to practice these techniques with randomly generated graphs. Figure 12 shows a randomly generated graph for a semi-log discussion.

In conclusion, World-in-Motion is a physics package that includes video analysis, lecture notes, data analysis, HTML editing and graphics tutorial software.

Figure 1 shows a picture of a bicycle moving from left to right across the video screen. This is the positive x direction.
An object's position is located in the video using an x-y coordinate system. When you move the mouse from left to right in the video, you will notice the x values increasing at the bottom of the screen. When you move the mouse from bottom to top in the video, you will notice the y values increasing at the bottom of the screen. The x position is zero at the left side of the video and the y position is zero at the bottom of the video.
If an object is moving right in the video, then we say it is moving in the positive x direction. If an object is moving left in the video, then we say it is moving in the negative x direction. If an object is moving up in the video, then we say it is moving in the positive y direction. If an object is moving down in the video, then we say it is moving in the negative y direction.
When you play the video, or step through the video, notice the time changing at the bottom of the screen. When you mark an object in the video, the computer records its position and time.
The computer uses SI units for time, length and mass. In the International System of Units (SI), the second (s) is the unit of time, the meter (m) is the unit of length, and the kilogram (kg) is the unit of mass.
Definitions:
Using these definitions, the one dimensional equations for constant velocity in the x direction are:
Notice that if you know xo, vo, and m, then you can write all the equations as functions of time. Also, notice that v = vo when the velocity is constant. Constant means, no change, does not change, zero change, stays the same, etc. Therefore, v and vo are interchangeable in the equations above. This will not be true when the velocity is not constant.
In Equation 2, the displacement is also written as:
D = vot
This is the area under a velocity-versus-time graph. It is a rectangle with the height equal to vo and the width equal to t. The area of this rectangle is (height)(width) = vot with units of (m/s)(s) = m. Therefore, the displacement can also be defined as the area under a velocity-versus-time graph.
Note: To review linear plots and constant velocity graphs, run the Graph Tutor software that came on this CD.
First notice that x = 0.247 m when t = 0 s in the table. This is xo, so you can write xo = 0.247 m. Next notice that D = 0 m when t = 0 s. Also notice that D = x - xo in the table. For example:
At t = 0 s, D = x - xo = 0.247 - 0.247 = 0 m.
At t = 0.4 s, D = x - xo = 1.379 - 0.247 = 1.132 m.
At t = 0.7 s, D = x - xo = 2.264 - 0.247 = 2.017 m.

The last calculation gives D = 2.017 m, while the data table shows 2.016 m. This difference is due to formatting in the table. The computer uses more significant digits than are shown. So, while you may not get the same numbers as shown in the table, you should be reasonably close.
Since velocity is the slope of position versus time, v = Dx/Dt, the computer calculates velocities using position and time data pairs. However, to get a better velocity at a specific time, the computer uses values before and after that time. For example:
At t = 0.1 s, v = (0.808 - 0.247)/(0.2 - 0) = 2.805 m/s.
At t = 0.4 s, v = (1.676 - 1.093)/(0.5 - 0.3) = 2.915 m/s.
At t = 0.6 s, v = (2.264 - 1.676)/(0.7 - 0.5) = 2.94 m/s.
Again, while you may not get the same numbers as shown in the table, you should be reasonably close.
Finally, the computer calculates momentum using p = mv. The mass in this experiment is 40 kg so:
At t = 0.1 s, p = 40(2.8) = 112 kg.m/s.
At t = 0.4 s, p = 40(2.91) = 116 kg.m/s.
At t = 0.6 s, p = 40(2.94) = 118 kg.m/s.
Is the bicycle's velocity reasonable? Convert the velocity to mi/h and to km/h using these conversions:
1 mi = 1609 m
1 km = 1000 m
1 h = 3600 s
