Measuring Conceptual Gains via Web-Based Testing

Web-based technology now allows pre- and post-tests to be administered over the Internet. So far, results have demonstrated no appreciable differences in scores between paper-based and web-based administration.

Paper Administration

Pros:

  • Can prevent cheating
  • Necessary materials and time provided to student – not dependent on completing as homework

Cons:

  • Consumes valuable instruction time during class or lab.
  • Resources to prepare, collect, score and analyze data can be expensive

Web-Based Administration

Pros:

  • Save class time
  • Eliminates errors of data input
  • Allows collection of new kinds of data such as the length of time required for responses.
  • Since data is already in a digital format, it can easily be used for multiple purposes

Cons:

  • Nearly impossible to verify the identity of the person completing an instrument
  • Easy for test takers to cheat.
  • Student web browsers may not support web-test format
  • All students may not have easy access to a computer or the Internet
