SESSION DESCRIPTION Session Title: Minigrant Writing for Middle and High School Science Teachers Abstract: I describe a brief assignment in writing short, small readily fundable grants for science teachers, together with a writing guide and a list of funders. 4. PROPOSAL I will describe (in a poster format) a three hour assignment given as both to preservice teachers as part of a science methods course and inservice teachers as part of externally funded professional development. This assignment asks participants to prepare a maximum 3 page minigrant proposal of less than $1000 budget according to a given format for submission to a local funder. Our typical funders includeWell-fargo bank, Arizona Public Service Corp, WalMart, Kmart and Home Depot. Most of these agencies have an open acceptance policy, and review funding proposals monthly. The grant writing format we use can be briefly summarized as: project description, project benefits and assessment, budget, and applicant's background. We give guidance to writing one paragraph or less for each of these areas, together with contact information for funders. Over one hundred preservice and inservice teachers have completed this assignment, and some samples of their comments and work will also be displayed. Bibliography: MacIsaac, D.L.
