INTRODUCTION
Dont you hate it when you spend a good chunk of time on a paper for class and get it back with a big red C on the top? The teacher says you didnt do exactly what he asked and youre frustrated because you dont think his instructions were very clear. Use this set of instructions, set up in the correct format you are to use, as a guide to writing up your labs!
The goal of a popular write -up is to make your work understandable to an intelligent nonscientist. Keep in mind that most local newspapers and popular magazines are written at a 5th-8th grade reading level. These labs should be written in the first person, and you should not use a lot of technical language. Please define any physics terms you use as you use them.
These labs should always be typed in this two column method, using a 12 point, single spaced font. Make sure your heading is done as above, and also be sure to use the section headings modeled here.
DESIGN
Please express your procedure as the unfolding of a story, NOT as an abbreviated list of steps. You are welcome to interject appropriate commentary within the procedure. (Something might have been particularly diffic ult or you might want to point out a clever idea you had.) The materials you used in the lab should be made evident as you tell the labs story ; they should be brought up in context, describing how they were used. Do not make a simple list of materials.
Pictures are a very important component of popular lab write-ups.
You should have a clear diagram that conveys the set-up of the experiment and illustrates the chief aspects of the procedure. These pictures can be hand-drawn or computer generated, but should be of exceptional quality. Diagrams should always be at least 4 by 6 in size (full page is better) and should always be titled, labeled and captioned.
DATA
While doing a lab you end up collecting a lot of information. Raw data consists only of things you measure directly. Usually these are taken several times to assure precision and accuracy. Raw data is al ways modified in some form. For example, it might be statistically manipulated (averaged) or be converted into other units. In this lab format you dont want to supply the reader with all of this in great detail (because generally these readers wont be very interested). It is more appropriate to tabulate the final refined data and explain any modifications that happened within the text of this section of the paper.
VISUAL
Hardly anyone can deduce the results of an experiment by merely looking at a list of tabulated data.
Our goal as researches is to find the patterns in the data. Visuals help us do this. For most labs, a line graph is the most appropriate visual, but in some cases a histogram or even a technical drawing can be more helpful. In this section of your paper
you should indicate what pieces of data you are trying to find the pattern in. You should then describe what visual method you have chosen to represent the data and defend that choice.
The visual itself should be full page, and again it can be hand drawn or computer generated, but it must be art. The visual should be meaningfully titled, labeled and captioned. If a slope of a graph was determined, this math should be included on the visual.
ANALYSIS & CONCLUSIONS
You should try to explain your results in words and avoid too much math. Any math you do include should be adequately explained. It is not necessary to include all of the calculations you did during the lab. Instead give a single example of each type of calculation.
In describing your results you
will need to address sources of error.
Since random errors are usually negated by taking a lot of data, it is (usually) only really important to identify and discuss systematic errors. Take care that the errors you identify correlate with the magnitude and sign of the percent differences that you found in your results. Again, keep in mind your audience and make sure your explanation of the results is appropriate.
A critical part of this section of your paper is to address the criteria relevant to the Type of lab you did.
Each type of lab has specific things you must address in order to receive full credit. Please be aware that this portion of your write-up is worth just over 20 of your grade!
At the end of this section you should give your opinion on the results of the lab and may also editorialize about the lab in general.
REFERENCES
If you used any references in doing your lab you should list them in this section. If no references were used, you can leave this section out.

ABSTRACT
Due to the fact that technical papers appeal to such a narrow range of readers, it is customary to begin them with a commercial that tells potential readers what to expect from the paper. These commercials are called abstracts. When researchers want to find information on a certain topic, they read the abstracts from relevant papers to find which ones they are most interested in. A good abstract should briefly indicate the topic being discussed and the general method of data acquisition. It is usually best to write the entire technical paper first, and then sum up the paper in 5-6 sentences and use that as the abstract.
INTRODUCTION
Writing papers is a significant portion of the workload in many high school and college courses. Unfortunately, many students are intimidated by these assignments because they feel the instructors do not define the criteria by which they will be scored explicitly. There is a general distrust of the subjective nature by which most papers are graded. This paper not only contains all of the information students need to be successful lab-writers, but is presented in the format that they themselves are required to use.
Technical papers are the vehicle by which scientists present there work to their peers. These papers contain immense amounts of scientific
information and are generally written at a graduate school reading level. These papers are therefore all but unintelligible to most people.
As a student in this course, your peers are your fellow students.
The technical papers should be written in a manner that is accessible to your classmates. Even though none of you are experts, it can be assumed that your intended audience is familiar with the basic vocabulary of physics. It is therefore unnecessary to define physics terms as you use them. Technical papers are to be written in the third person, which promotes objectivity and credibility. The writer should refer to herself and her partner as the investigators or the researchers.
These labs should always be typed in this two column method, using a 12 point, single spaced font. Make sure the heading is done as above, and also be sure the section headings modeled here are employed.
DESIGN
The audience of a technical paper is going to be particularly interested in the details of your procedure. Enough detail should be given that a reader could completely reproduce your experiment on her own, with only your paper as guidance.
The procedure sho uld be related as a chronological narrative. Any materials used in the experiment should come up naturally within the narrative and their utility in the task should be expressed explicitly. Do NOT simply create a list of materials.
To help describe the set-up and procedure of the experiment, include a diagram. The diagram for a technical paper should illustrate the conditions under which the data was taken or a particularly important aspect of the procedure. The diagrams can be either computer generated or hand drawn, but must be of exceptional quality. Diagrams should be full page illustrations that are appropriately titled, labeled and captioned.
DATA
In this lab format students are expected to provide the reader with all of the raw data taken in the experiment. Additionally, any modification to the data including statistical manipulation or conversion of units should be included as well.
All of the data (both raw and refi ned) should be presented in a table with titles, column headings and captions. Where multiple trials were conducted, data should be labeled accordingly.
Within the text of this section of the paper the author should indicate the reasons for and methods of data refinement.
VISUAL
In order to find the pattern in the data from an experiment, the investigators should produce a visual.
The most typical type of visual is the line graph, but there are circumstances where other presentations, such as a histogram or even a technical drawing are more appropriate.
The visuals can be either computer generated or hand-drawn but must be of exceptional quality.
Visuals should be created as full-page documents and include meaningful titles, labels and captions.
Within this section of the text the author should indicate which data is being represented, and why the particular mode of presentation was chosen. If a line graph is produced, explicit identification of the independent and dependent variables is required. The slope calculation should appear on the graph along with the equation of the line.
ANALYSIS & CONCLUSIONS
An example of all calculations done during this experiment should be provided in this section.
When presenting your results, it is appropriate to do so in words, but the explanation should be backed up mathematically. In discussing your results, sources of error should be mentioned. This discussion should be limited to systematic errors. Take care that the errors you identify match up t o the magnitude and sign of the percent differences you calculated.
Within this section of the paper, the criteria for the specific Type of lab that was performed should be addressed. Note that each type of lab has very different, specific requirements. Note also that these requirements are worth over 20% of the credit for the paper.
At the end of this section of the paper the author is to lapse into the first person and give a personal reflection of the experiment. You can talk about your results or editorialize in general about the lab.
