Geometric Optics

Concave Mirror

Solution

An object 1.0 cm tall is placed 10.0 cm in front of a concave mirror with a radius of curvature of +30.0 cm.

Q1: Determine the characteristics of the image including the distance, whether it is virtual or real, the magnification, and the height.

f = R/2 = 30 cm/2 = 15 cm

di = dof/(do - f) = (10 cm)(15 cm)/(10 cm - 15 cm) = 150 cm2/-5 cm = -30 cm

M = -di/do = -(-30 cm)/10 cm = 3 times larger

hi = ho * M = 1 cm * 3 = 3 cm

The image is virtual (di = -30cm), upright (hi = +3 cm) and magnified by 3.

Q2: Draw a ray diagram for this situation below and indicate your scale.
